Berserkers were Vikings who went into a frenzy in battle and were unaware of pain or wounds. Bears were both revered and feared animals by the Norsemen. The power and ferocity of berserkers can certainly be reminiscent of fighting bears. That's why the bear's paw is a symbol of the frenzy in battle.
The Germanic peoples believed that by wearing bear claws, the bear's enormous power would be transferred to them.
